Partnerships in the community, dedication to building high quality homes at fair prices is how David Edgell and Edgell Building have propelled themselves into being one of Missoula's premier builders and developers.
In 1979, as the economy was experiencing major shifts, and housing was reduced to a standstill, Edgell was laid off and began his own company, Edgell Construction. His construction career began by doing remodels, which soon led to his first house project, a 5,000 sq foot home. This was the start of a very successful career.
Four years into his building career, David Edgell partnered with Dave Theisen. Together they founded Horizon Enterprises and led the way to revive the housing market of the 80's. By using low interest State Board of Housing loans, Horizon built affordable quality homes that sold rapidly. From Missoula to Florence, Horizon became a large force in the home building market.
"Our aim was to build relatively small homes that had more style than the box style homes that were typical of the early 70's-80's". This success was reflected in the lower Grant Creek area known as Prospect. Today, it is still one of Missoula"s most sought after neighborhoods.
In 1992, Horizon restructured from Horizon Enterprises to Edgell Homes, building custom and mid-range homes. In addition, Edgell Building partnered with Collin Bangs of Coldwell Banker developing and building affordable neighorhoods including: Orchard Park in Lolo, Bently Park and Windsor Park in Missoula. Hellgate Meadows, a Traditional Neighborhood Design, (TND) project is near completion. For this project Edgell Homes partnered with Neighborhood by Design to incorporate commercial, multi-family, single-family town homes, assisted living and open spaces. This village type atmosphere assisted in overcoming concerns of high-density neighborhoods by showing how "diversity" and "planning" creates community.
A construction and development partnership with two other builders followed at Phantom Hills, a golf course community west of Missoula, developed by Washington Corporation. A successful town home project, The Dunes, was built as well as numerous single family homes. With the recent sale of the golf course and remaining real estate, the project, renamed as The Ranch Club, is moving in a different direction.
Since participating in the Parade of Homes the first time in 1990, Edgell Building has received numerous awards from "Best In Show" to "Builder of the Year" to "People's Choice". Their concern for affordability and quality is reflected in their homes and commercial work. "As much as we enjoy building, meeting new clients and building relationships with them is the most rewarding part of our business."
In 2006, Edgell Building moved into their new expanded offices at 316 Expressway. The company's new offices depicts the same quality craftsmanship that you will find in any of the homes or commercial buildings they have built. "Designed with vision, built with integrity." This best describes Edgell Building.
With the additional office space, they have also added family. The addition of David's two sons, Mark and Justin to the company will expand the family owned and operated business and "this has made it all the more satisfying". David Edgell and his wife Sylvia have recently celebrated 33 years together. They have three grown children, Justin, Jill, and Mark.
